Knee Pain FAQs

If you’re plagued with knee pain, you know how frustrating it can be. Debilitating pain can make daily tasks difficult and lower your quality of life. A visit to East Detroit Chiropractic Center may provide you with solutions to your pain. These FAQs compiled by our doctors explain more about knee pain causes and how chiropractic can help.

.

What causes knee pain?

Osteoarthritis is perhaps the most common cause of knee pain. Wear and tear of your knee cartilage causes bones to rub against each other, resulting in pain. Age, knee overuse, and obesity all contribute to developing osteoarthritis.

Your knee joints are also susceptible to soft tissue damage like ruptured ligaments, strained muscles, and dislocated joints due to injury, repetitive motions, or frequent twisting of your knee. In addition to pain, you may experience swelling or hear popping sounds when the knee is in use.

How does spinal imbalance contribute to knee pain?

Imbalances in your spinal system can affect how weight is distributed through your body. Incorrect distribution of weight can put undue pressure on your knees, resulting in pain. Left unchecked, the pain in your knees can worsen and lead to premature arthritis.

What can I expect from my first chiropractic knee pain visit?

Our chiropractor will review your medical history to get a better picture of your state of health and past conditions and treatments. We’ll then thoroughly examine your knees and perform a number of tests to diagnose your condition. We’ll ask you to describe your symptoms and observe how you stand, walk, and maintain your balance. If necessary, we’ll order an x-ray or MRI to pinpoint the cause of your pain, so we can determine if you’re a candidate for chiropractic knee pain treatment.

How can chiropractic care help with knee pain? Don’t I need surgery?

Not all knee conditions require surgery. Depending on the cause and severity of your pain, you may be able to benefit from chiropractic knee pain treatment. If your pain stems from misalignments in your musculoskeletal system, these can be corrected through chiropractic adjustments. Restoring balance to your system takes excess pressure off of your knees to reduce pain.

If you’re overweight, we’ll recommend lifestyle changes to help you lose excess weight that’s putting undue pressure on your knees. We’ll also recommend strengthening exercises to improve knee flexibility and mobility. Massage therapy may also be used to increase blood flow to injured tissues and help them heal quicker.
